Last week we finished mixing the music to film "¿Estás ahí?" (which means "Are you there?) My very first comedy!! Directed by Roberto Santiago ("El penalti más largo del mundo", "El club de los suicidas") and starring Gorka Otxoa ("Pagafantas") and Miren Ibarguren ("Aída") We recorded the music in Bratislava, with a medium orchestra (strings, some woodwinds and 4 fhorns) Thanks to David Hernando, Claudio Ianni and to Marc Blanes. Without them this wouldn't have been possible!

Hello everyone!!!

Hierro opened all over Spain last friday. There's a webpage where you can get a lot of info from the movie. Even an animated poster!!

I can also tell you that MovieScoreMedia will release the soundtrack for Hierro. I don't know exactly when this is going to happen but it'll be soon and I am really thrilled about it.

Cerca de tus ojos in Valladolid's Seminci

Human rights documentary "Cerca de tus ojos" directed by Elías Querejeta will have its premiere in 2009 Valladolid International Film Festival (Seminci). After producing many notable films, this is Elías' first film as director. We finished recording guitars and mixing the music last week. Thanks to the Crespos, Ara and Dragos!! Hierro in Sitges

Hierro premiered last friday in Sitges 42nd Fantastic Film International Festival. Starring Elena Anaya and directed by newcomer Gabe Ibáñez. It's finally here!! MovieScoreMedia has just published the soundtrack to horror movie Imago Mortis. Here you'll find more info and you'll be able to hear some of the cd's tracks and this is a link to the itunes page.
The music was recorded in Sofia by the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra and chorus conducted by Dejan Paulov. Orchestrations by Claudio Ianni. Music recorded and mixed by José Vinader. Hierro in Cannes

This is a frame from thriller Hierro which premiered in Cannes last monday in a special screening during the Critics' Week. Directed by Gabe Ibáñez and produced by Madrugada Films and Telecinco.
I finished the soundtrack about three weeks ago. We recorded with the Kiev Philharmonic and chorus. You can check out some photos of the studio below. It's here!! The movie directed by Marie Noëlle and Peter Sehr premieres today in Spain. It's been almost a year since we finished working for this coproduction between Germany France and Spain. The cast includes Juan Diego Botto as Justo Calderón, María Valverde as Manuela and Ivana Baquero as their daughter Paloma. Hope you all go to see it. 3 premieres on the same day

This morning I realized one curious thing. The three films to which I compose music last year have opened the very same day.
On the one hand, "Carmo hit the road" and "The anarchist's wife" were selected for Sundance Film Festival, and both films premiered last friday 16th. Each one on its own category.
And on the other hand, the last film I made, the italian-spanish coproduction "Imago Mortis" opened in Italy last friday too!!

When I compose the soundtrack to a film, one of the main things I want to see after the whole process is finished is the movie in the cinemas. The percentage of spanish films that are fisnished but do not make it to the theaters is really worrying.
That is why, to have 3 films premiere the very same day is quite amazing to me...

Sundance: Carmo and The Anarchist's wife

We're going to Sundance with two films!!
Carmo will compete in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition in Sundance's 25th Film Festival!! It is on of this year's 16 films selected from a record 1,012 submissions!!

And a similar thing has happened with "The Anarchist's wife" which has been selected for the festival's Spectrum section.

Imago Mortis, soundtrack finished!!

Hello everyone!!!
About a month ago we finished mixing the music to the thriller/horror "Imago Mortis". The film is produced by Pixstar (Italy) and Telecinco (Spain) and it's directed by Stefano Bessoni (check his blog for more info and pictures from the movie). We've recorded the music with the Bulgarian Symphonic Orchestra and Choir in Sofia. Claudio Ianni took care of the orchestrations and Jose Vinader of the mixing. Delaney

Just finished composing the soundtrack to a really funny shortfilm called "Delaney". Written and directed by Carles Torrens (those of you who haven't seen his short "Coming to town", what are you waiting for?? Go and see it here), starring Daeg Faerch and Delaney Manning among others. A hilarious and macabre story about a family that own a motel along route 66 and due to the lack of clients are forced to find alternative ways to survive. We've been double-nominated to the III Jerry Godsmith awards!!!!
Best soundtrack for a movie for "The anarchist´s wife" and best soundtrack for an animated short for "Tadeo Jones and the basement of doom". More info here.
The Jerry Goldsmith awards are one of the key events of the IV International Film Music Conference "Ciudad de Úbeda" to be held from 10 to 13 July 2008.

Carmo and Cannes

Carmo will premiere in Cannes film festival (in the MIF) sunday May 18th. Those of you who will be lucky enough to be near Cannes at that time, don't miss the opportunity to go and see it. I don't know the spanish release date but as soon as I do I'll let you know. Carmo is a roadmovie filled with action, romance and comedy, filmed in brazilian's Mato Grosso and in Brazil-Paraguay-Argentina's border. The cast includes spanish actor Fele Martínez and brazilians Mariana Loureiro and Seu Jorge. It is produced by A CONTRALUZ FILMS and directed by the incredibly talented Murilo Pasta. As soon as I have a trailer or some photos I'll post them in the blog.

The anarchist's wife and the Bayerischer Rundfunk orchestra

Just came back from Munich where we recorded what was left to record of the soundtrack to "The Anarchist's wife". It's been an interesting and positive experience. They have a completely different way of working. Amazing to see up to 9 people in charge of the recording (apart from director and musicians of course): the recording supervisor, the engineer, the engineer assistant, 2 pro-tools technicians, a person in charge of the scores and parts, another one in charge of cables and headphones, etc... Really amazing. As soon as I have a mix down of the 5.1s I'll post some of the cues. Here some of the photos I made during the recording...

Tomorrow we're recording the music for "Carmo", a brazilian road movie, directed by Murilo Pasta with Fele Martínez, Mariana Loureiro and Seu Jorge among others. Hello and happy new year to everyone!! Hope you all had some good holidays...
About a month ago we recorded in CATA studios in Madrid the soundtrack for the romantic drama "The Anarchist's wives". 2 orchestral sessions, 1 with a string quartet plus flute, and 3 more to record soloists. I am uploading one of the music themes of the movie, you can listen to it using the player below. This cue is for the scene where Manuela (María Valverde) finally gets some news about her husband's (Juan Diego Botto) whereabouts. He has just been released from a concentration camp in Germany. They're finally going to be able to reunite after many years without seeing each other... I have to thank José Luis Crespo, Claudio Ianni and Álex Martínez for their incredible work!!! Thanks guys!!!

Tadeo Jones and the basement of doom™ has just won best music award in AlCine's Festival!!! The composition of the soundtrack for this second part has been a big challenge. The short is much longer (=more music), many more things happen (=music becomes more complicated) and we had the Prague Symphony waiting to record the soundtrack... glups! And the night before the recording I was still finishing off the main theme... ayayayyyy!!! But thanks to Gato, Nico Matji, Claudio Ianni, José Vinader and Almudena Hidalgo everything went very well! You can hear for yourself in the mp3 below (it's Tadeo's theme) The award is the recognition of a job well done, so Congrats to everyone! Thanks ALCINE and thanks guys!!

Shostakovich and mon oncle

Next week the "Andrés Segovia" chamber orchestra, directed by Víctor Ambroa, will play and arrengement of mine of a piece by Shostakovich called "Tahiti-trot" in the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid next tuesday at 19:30. There's some interesting info about this work here.

first weeks of composing the score for "The Last of the Just"
Hello everyone, It's been a few weeks since I began composing the score for the thriller "The Last of the Just". Directed by Manu Carballo and produced by Filmax, Ensueño Films and Lemon Films. For more info about the film, go here and here.
I am still in reel 1 but I already have some leitmotifs. Below you can listen to one of them. It's a mock-up version (using samplers only) but the quality is not that bad. This leitmotif in particular is for the main character Teo (played by Diego Martin) and you can hear it in his moments of calm and instrospection. Tell me what you think...
